FACT-PC Newsletter #49 2002-08-19 ======================== If you are receiving this e-mail then your Internet address is on our FACT-PC list. To remove yourself from the list, or to add new addresses, please consult the following website: http://www.crct.polymtl.ca/newsletters/subscribe.php This and earlier versions of the Newsletter are also available on the web via our home page at http://www.crct.polymtl.ca/newletters/fact.php ======================================================================= ------------------------- Topics in this newsletter: ------------------------- 1. FactSage 5.1 Feedback 2. Problems with Windows XP? 3. New CRCT and F*A*C*T Home Pages 4. Workshop and Conference, October 15 & 16, Ithaca, New York 5. Calphad 2003 - May 25 - 30, La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada 6. GTT-Technologies Newsletter & New E-mail Addresses ======================================================================= ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. FactSage 5.1 Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------------- FactSage 5.1 was released in June 2002. Apart from Japan and certain areas in Australia, those who are entitled to an update should have received from us a small business-card-sized CD-Rom that enables you to upgrade a current FactSage 5.0 installation to FactSage 5.1. If you are entitled to an update but have not received one then please send us an email to crct@polymtl.ca If you wish to install the FactSage 5.1 Update on a new PC, you must first install FactSage 5.0 and then run the update program. To date the feedback on FactSage 5.1 has been very positive especially with respect to the Phase Diagram module and new Equilib Macro Processing. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Problems with Windows XP? ------------------------------------------------------------------- FactSage 5.1 can run under Windows XP. However MemoHASP dongle users must install the latest Hasp driver. The 4.65 version was included in the FactSage 5.1 update. This may not work for certain PCs. A more recent version (4.75) has been released by Aladdin at http://www.ealaddin.com/support/hasp/vendor.asp Download Hinstall.ZIP, unzip it and copy the file Hinstall.exe into the MemoHASP directory of your FactSage installation (typically c:\FactSage\MemoHASP). If you can not locate \MemoHASP this is because you have not updated to FactSage 5.1 After you have copied Hinstall.exe, in the FactSage main menu window click on 'Tools > MemoHASP Security ... > Install drivers ...'. If you get an error message of the type 'User has no access to the Database registry ...' this probably means you are using NT-based technology (NT 4, 2000, XP) and you do not have full 'Administrator' privileges to access the windows and system directories - this is a common problem with PCs maintained by a company. You need to contact the company IT people or network manager. If you are not sure if you have installed the latest drivers click on 'Tools > MemoHASP Security ... > Display driver status ...' and make sure it is 'Version installed: 4.75' If you still have problems trying to activate the dongle under Windows XP please contact us at crct@polymtl.ca ------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. New CRCT and F*A*C*T Home Pages ------------------------------------------------------------------- We are working on a new www.crct.polymtl.ca web site. With the new site there will be new features. For example, FACT-Web users should be pleased to hear that the Reaction-Web program will be reinstalled together with new Predom-Web and EpH-Web modules. These are great for teaching and getting started. We plan to have the new site in operation by the end of August 2002. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Workshop and Conference, October 15 & 16, Ithaca, New York ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Spencer Group invites you to its 4th Annual Computational Thermodynamics Workshop on October 15th and October 16th, 2002 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Central to the workshop will be the FactSage software package and F*A*C*T databases. There will also be software demonstrated which enables the incorporation of kinetic data in conjunction with thermodynamic minimization routines (ChemSheet, ChemApp and SimuSage). The cost is US $1,000 per person; 20% discount for more than 1 attendee from the same organization. For the registration form and other information please visit http://www.spencergroupintl.com or contact Dr. Philip Spencer: E-mail: info@spencergroupintl.com Tel. (607) 387-4038 Fax. Calphad 2003 - May 25 - 30, La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada ------------------------------------------------------------------- We are organizing Calphad XXXII - An International Conference on Phase Diagram Calculations and Computational Thermochemistry. For the latest info please contact http://www.calphad.org/ and click on 'Conferences > Calphad Meetings 2002 - future > 2003 Montreal' The conference site is at Le Manoir Richelieu near La Malbaie on the St. Lawrence river.
